(short description):
The layered crystal structures of various tetradymite group minerals are very common for stable modifications of e.g. germanium antimony tellurides that contain rocksalt-type slabs and additional A7-type antimony layers. The real structures (defect ordering, twinning, domain structures) of metastable layered compounds like MSb10Te4 (M = Ge, Sn) as well as pseudocubic samples of (Sb2Te3)(GeTe)n and GeBi2Te4 have been elucidated by X-ray diffraction (diffuse scattering, anomalous dispersion) and HRTEM. The thermoelectric properties can be related to the composition, to concentration modulations and to the nano- or microstructure of the samples.
