(short description):
Given the fact that many sections of slow spreading ridges are at water depths greater than 3000 m, the submarine hydrothermalism at 5S on the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) with extreme fluxes of heat, metals and unique rare earth element chemistry (REE) is of general significance for oceanic element budgets. Transport-reaction processes in these hydrothermal systems are poorly constrained. We were able to experimentally reproduce the REE concentrations and no Eu-anomaly as known from 5S MAR hydrothermal fluids, while our experiments at p-T-conditions of the single phase seawater field exhibits at least no LREE depletion and a very pronounced Eu-anomaly.
