Abstract - Summary 
(short description):
A fine oscillation zoning of plagioclase megaphenocrysts from explosive rocks of Tolbachik volcanoes is considered. The zoning profiles have been recorded from BSE images as well as by specially developed optical method. The latter variant is based on the measurements of extinction angles with respect to [001] direction with a space resolution of about 1m. According to the mathematical fractal analysis neither periodic nor random component dominates and the zoning can be described as a chaotic pattern. The zoning is strongly persistent with the Hurst exponent equal to 0.94. The correlation dimension method gives the strange attractor dimension equal to 4.2(1) reflecting the high complexity of the system. Comparison of our and literature data shows the high degree of similarity of plagioclase zoning patterns from very different volcanic rocks. This strongly argues for the internal control (self-induced oscillations) of the zoning formation and against various external reasons like magma mixing or large-scale convection.
