(short description):
Fibrous zeolites with common formula {Ń2R2A2} [(Si,Al)5O10] are characterized by vacancies in A-positions or their partial occupancy. Their occupation by water molecules at increase of water pressure results in the structural transformation to high-hydrated phase with enlarged volume. For ordered zeolites, the transition pressure is about 1 GPa (natrolite, scolecite) or higher (thomsonite). However, an additional hydration is possible at significantly lower water pressure. The reversibility of paranatrolie– tetranatrolite phase transformation has been found. The existence of a particular phase depends on both the cation composition and the water vapour pressure in ambient atmosphere. The problem of the reversibility of paranatrolite-tetranatrolite transformation is a key problem in understanding the genesis and nomenclature of the natrolite group zeolites, which remain debatable in several aspects.
