Abstract - Summary 
(short description):
Peprossiite-(Ce) and REAl-metaborate (RE = La-Nd) crystals have hexagonal plate-like habit as a result of two-dimensional crystal structure built of layered type of BO4-polyanion. Their space groups and lattice constants are similar. However, the genesis suggested is quite different. It was described as a secondary mineral with temperature region of 550-100oC and pressure of 1kbar. At the other hand, synthetic REAl-metaborates crystallize at about 1000oC under ambient pressure. For example, single crystals of (Ce,La)Al representative were grown form high-temperature solutions in the range of 1030-900oC. In contrast to earlier publications, recent IR spectroscopy investigations indicate that minor number of boron triangles also exists in their structures, both natural and synthetic.
