The feature of Mottled Zone rocks is that they host exceptionally rare Cr mineralization, with such species as chromatite, bentorite, hashemite, as well as (CrO4)2--substituted ettringite found for the first time along with abundant volconscoite, chromium oxide hydrate, and Cr-bearing opaque minerals (brownmillerite, Ca ferrite, and spinel). These rock complexes provided a unique combination of the physico-chemical conditions necessary for the formation and conservation of these rare minerals, namely high Cr content and ultra-alkaline environment.
