Abstract - Summary (short description): | |
Natural diamonds occur with a range of morphological and physical properties. The principal growth morphologies of diamonds are octahedra with smooth faces and cuboid crystals usually with rough surfaces but an overall cubic habit. It has been suggested earlier that octahedral and cuboid diamonds differ in nitrogen concentration. Detailed variations in growth history may be recognized by studying crystals of mixed (octahedral plus cuboid) habit. Forty one natural diamonds with mixed habit and different internal structures from two yakutian kimberlite pipes have been examined, using methods of optical birefringence, and scanning microscopy, cathodoluminescence and infrared spectroscopy. Measurements show, that the N content is systematically higher in octahedral sectors than in cuboid ones, so it is controlled by mechanism of growth. The variations between inner cuboid domains and outer octahedral zones also have a systematic character, but they are probably not due to purely kinetic effects and can be explained by increased nitrogen concentration in growth medium. |
