AGU 2009 Joint Assembly MA10: Defect Centers in Minerals - From Mineralogy to Geophysics

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to a session at the upcoming AGU 2009 Joint Assembly, The Meeting of the Americas, 24Ц27 May 2009, to be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

MA10: Defect Centers in Minerals - From Mineralogy to Geophysics
http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja09/

Sponsor: Mineralogical Society of America
Cosponsor: Canadian Geophysical Union, Near Surface Geophysics, Seismology, Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology

Conveners:
Sanda M. Botis
Department of Geological Sciences
University of Saskatchewan

Hans J. Mueller
GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences

Description:
Ubiquitous in crystalline solids, defect centers are of considerable interest to geologists. Even at low concentration the incorporation of defect centers in minerals can modify the optical properties, diffusion rates, electrical conductivity, elasticity, creep, seismic attenuation and stability of their hosts. This session will focus on the understanding of defect centers behavior and stability and their applications in various areas of earth sciences. We encourage contributions related but not restricted to the applications of defect centers to mineralogy, gemology, luminescence, geochronology, nuclear waste disposals, mineral exploration and geophysics.

Confirmed invited presenters include:
Lutz Nasdala (University of Vienna),
Jim Van Orman (Case Western Reserve University),
Geoffrey Bromiley (University of Edinburg) and
Yuanming Pan (University of Saskatchewan).
